When Charlie Chaplin visited the Old Vic in the early 1950s he told Hugh Hunt that he had once applied to Emma Cons, Lilian Baylis’s aunt who then ran the Old Vic, for work at there. Not knowing Emma Cons’s golden rule - that she never replied to a letter that did not include a SAE - he was disappointed not to hear anything back from her. Years later when he was famous he found out that he could have worked at the Old Vic if only he’d included an SAE. Emma Cons’s golden rule still applies in membership matters and if you send me a cheque but not an SAE, I will assume that you do not want an acknowledgement of receipt.
